Basic Keelboat Sailing

    Northern Breezes Sailing School is offering you a terrific Learn to Sail Program featuring a combination of the finest school and a superb Capri 22’ sailboat located in Ludington, Michigan.  Classes will be conducted on Pere Marquette Lake, or weather permitting, Lake Michigan. This is a three-session, 12-hour course taught by Northern Breezes Sailing School instructors certified by the American Sailing Association (ASA). Classes meet over a three day period and are offered on weekends with a Friday through Sunday format and there are also midweek classes. All classes are limited to three students. This creates a small seminar environment which provides for great skipper and crew training. Each session starts with a briefing on the day’s lesson and getting underway and ends with docking and securing the boat. Each student will receive the book and DVD, Sailing Fundamentals, Federal Regulations, Log Book and Pre-Test.

Course Outline

Day 1: Outboard Engine, Getting Underway, Tacking, Points of Sail, Boat Balance, Trim, Docking, Securing the Boat.

Day 2: Review, Tacking and Jibing, Sail Trim, Helming, Crew Overboard Drill, Heaving to, Reefing

Day 3: Review, Crew Overboard Drill, Solo Checkout, Written Exam

Classes are cancelled and rescheduled during storm advisory or rain days. A Certificate of Completion, Wallet Card, and ASA Logbook with Basic Keelboat seal will be issued upon completion. Graduates will receive National Safe Boating certification approved by NASBLA and the USCG.

Course Fee: Three 4-hour sessions, including class materials: $395. $39 discount for couples (any two people signing up together) with two sets of materials or $79 discount for couples who wish to share materials. *We are flexible. Class Location Peter Copeyon Park. Take US 31 North from Muskegon to Ludington Exit US 10 West. Turn left onto Washington Avenue, Peter Copeyon Park is approximately 1/2 mile on the right.
